美国插画师协会的学生奖学金竞赛，是美国当代大学生插画专业的一项最权威的比赛，来自全美几百所大学的数千名大学生向协会提交他们的作品以参加比赛。插画师协会组成由插画艺术家和艺术总监组成的评委会，对这些优秀作品进行评选，最终选出最优秀的学生作品颁发奖学金，而这些获奖者无疑是美国大学生中插画人才的佼佼者。
每年的获奖者大多来自美国传统的九大艺术学院，包括纽约视觉艺术学院、罗德岛设计学院、艺术中心设计学院、帕森斯设计学院、马里兰艺术学院等等，今年的获奖学生也不例外。
今年的获奖学生一共32人，其中5位获动画作品前五名奖学金，另外27位获得了插画奖学金。看一下这些同学来自哪些大学，也会让我们对美国各个大学插画专业的实力有一个直观的了解。
这些学生中，动画专业的前五名被帕森斯和罗德岛两所学校包揽，这真是让人惊叹，可见这两所学校在近年来确实是在动画专业投入了很多资源，也让自己动画专业的教学水平突飞猛进，反倒是一些传统的动画名校没有上榜。
插画方面，获奖最多的学校是SVA(纽约视觉艺术学院)，共有6人获奖，尤其是他们获奖名次很高，前六名中第1、3、4、5名居然都来自SVA，插画第一名校的称号当之无愧。然后是RISD(罗德岛设计学院)的4人和瑞林艺术设计学院Ringling College of Art & Design的3人。再往下是ACCD(艺术中心设计学院)和谢尔丹学院的各2人。插画传统名校MICA(马里兰艺术学院)、PRATT(普瑞特)和CCA(加州艺术学院)也都有学生获奖。
从学生们的创作媒介来看，传统的绘画、综合材料绘画、数码绘画都大有人在，没有哪种媒介占有特别大的优势，多数学生会把手绘和数码绘画结合使用，以得到更丰富多变的视觉效果，只单纯采用数码绘画的学生作品反而不多。可见在学生阶段，大学老师们还是非常鼓励学生们大胆对各种材料进行尝试和探索，虽然数码绘画效率要高很多，但是在学生阶段，还是要打开思路、解放手脚，多去尝试才对。
从1981年设立本奖至今的40年来，美国插画师协会已经向获奖学生颁发了超过150万美元的奖金，这些奖学金来自私人和企业的捐赠，以及会员捐赠艺术品的拍卖所得。许多今天在插画、动画和漫画领域的杰出人士如丹多斯桑托斯、詹姆斯贝内特、卡迪尔尼尔森等等都曾经是这个奖项的获得者。
